Oscar is an American Award, need not make a huge hue and cry : Nassar
Nassar |
Nasser,
the character-actor par excellence, has said that Indians in general and Tamils
in particular need not make a huge ‘hue and cry’ about receiving/not receiving
Oscar awards as those awards are mainly intended for Americans. “Why should we
lose our sleep about the awards; what’s the need for us to aim and secure those
awards?” he asked.
Nasser was taking part in a book-fair
held at Erode a few days back. Yesteryear’s hero and today’s character actor
Rajesh also took part in the event. The organizers of the Book Fair had made
arrangements for Nasser to chat and interact with the readers who had thronged
the venue. Replaying to queries from the readers and his fans, Nasser was at
his oratorical best when commenting about Indians’ fascination about the Oscar
awards.
“Cine-artistes in Tamil Nadu and India
seem to be talking too much about the Academy (Oscar) awards. First of all,
let’s make our minds clear about this: it’s just an award instituted by the
U.S. Govt. to be given away to films made by companies which are registered
firms in U.S. Does any other foreigner (other than India) regrets about not
receiving those awards?
“Certainly not; why should we then bother
our heads about it? As far as I’m concerned, we are paying too much attention
about getting/not getting Oscar awards. Sivaji Ganesan, the legendary actor who
re-wrote the face of Tamil films, never got any award for ‘best actor’; what
does it mean? Does it in any way take away his deeds and achievements?
“For the past four years, I’m penning a book
about acting and the nuances of it. I’m sure it would be beneficial to the
whole society. Once veteran K. Balachander asked me why shouldn’t I get my name
changed as ‘Nasser’ was too short; though he is a director who produced legends
such as Kamal and Rajini, I politely told him that I didn’t want to change the
name given to me by my parents,” concluded Nasser.
